Decades before #MeToo broke the internet, my mom, Cynthia, stood up for women's rights and respect in the workplace. In the early 1990s, she lead her female colleagues to win the largest settlement ever reported of a sexual harassment lawsuit against an international oil company. Then in a second lawsuit, she helped nearly 800 women file a class action against the same company for discrimination towards women in promotions, job assignments and salaries. Both of these successful lawsuits set legal precedents for how women are treated in the workplace. Although our society still struggles with sexual harassment as reflected in the recent #MeToo movement, and women are still underpaid compared to men - 80 cents to the dollar - Cynthia was an early trailblazer for feminism in the workplace.
